AN INTRODUCTION TO THE GOVERNING BODY

Welcome to the governors’ page of the school website. Here you’ll find information about who we are and what we do.  Governor's should note that all the School's Policies can be found here and that some are password protected (this can be obtained from the headmaster)

The governors are a group of volunteers who make a positive contribution to the school by giving time and bringing their experience to help with school improvement.

The key roles of the governing body are to:

  • Provide a strategic direction for the work and improvement of the school

  • Monitor and evaluate the  effectiveness of the school, by being supportive, yet challenging

  • Hold the school to account for the standards and the quality of education delivered.

To enable us to do this effectively, individual governors make visits into school and attend training courses to enhance their knowledge.

We meet as a whole group once each term (six times a year) and also work in smaller groups on various initiatives related to the School Improvement Plan.

During the school year the governors publish their school profile. This replaced the annual report to parents and gives you an overview of how the school is doing. You’ll be informed via the school newsletter when it has been updated, usually in term 3 or 4 and it will then be posted on to the website and the school notice board for you to peruse. Of course, individual copies can also be obtained from the office on request.

It is important as governors that we know your thoughts on how the school is doing. Sometimes we run questionnaires to canvass your opinion, but we’re also keen to get feedback from you at any time. It’s especially important to know the positive things – these are easily not fed back because you’re satisfied with how things are going, but your voice is a hugely important part of how the school’s success is measured, both internally and when we’re being assessed by external inspectors.

Equally, if you’ve got a grumble, please don’t let it simmer at the school gate. The school operates an open door policy so issues can be raised informally, or an appointment can be made with your child’s teacher or the head teacher. If you do not feel the issue has been adequately dealt with then please write to the Chair of Governors, Mrs Tracy Barnett.

BRIZE NORTON SCHOOL GOVERNORS

CHAIR - TRACY BARNETT - PARENT

I have been a parent governor at Brize Norton since 2001 and took on the role of chairman two years ago. With a new building and a new head teacher we are moving into a very exciting period for the school. I am very proud to be part of such a supportive and caring school in which children enjoy their learning. I have responsibility within the Governing body for Performance Management and Finance, as well as working with the other governors on our School Improvement Priorities.
I live in Bampton with my husband, whose family has farmed in Brize Norton for many years, and our two boys. They both benefited greatly from their time at Brize Norton Primary School and are now at Burford Secondary School.

VICE-CHAIR - PHIL SAMPSON - PARENT

Recently re-elected as Vice-Chair of the School Governing Body, Brize Norton School is a pivotal part of the local community.  As part of the Governing Body, I have specific responsibility for all Fire and Health and Safety matters within the school; this includes the production and upkeep of risk assessments to ensure that we continue to comply with mandated legislation.  I am also the nominated Special Educational Needs (SEN) Governor for the school.  I look forward to working with the other members of the Governing Body, Head Teacher and members of staff in the future to continue to raise the standards of the school and provide a vibrant and stimulating environment in which to learn.

MARK SMITH - HEADTEACHER (EX OFFICIO)

I was appointed as the headteacher of Brize Norton Primary School in September 2007. I am very proud to have taken up this new role, having grown up in the village and attending the village school as a child. After working in Swindon for several years I took up the post of deputy headteacher of another local school for four years, before applying at Brize Norton. My role is to advise and report to the Governing Body about the overall development of the school.

CHRISTINE EAGLESTONE - PARENT

I have been a governor here since 2005.  Two of my children have been to Brize Norton School and loved their time here. It set them up for success at Burford Secondary School. As a day job I am a teacher at another local secondary school.  With this knowledge and my previous governing experience at another primary school, I hope to help keep this school the vibrant, forward thinking, caring place that it is.

MIRANDA MOWBRAY - PARENT

I joined the governing body at Brize Norton Primary School in September 2010. I have three children, two of whom are presently pupils at the school. I am keen to support the school in it’s ongoing success and look forward to becoming more involved as my role develops. I work at The John Radcliffe Hospital part time as a Cardiac Rehabilitation Nurse.

LUCY ARTUS - PARENT

I moved to Brize Norton in 2004 and became a Parent Governor in 2008.  Two of my children attend the school now and my oldest child attended for four years before leaving for secondary school.  I have been a Cycling Proficiency Instructor and a member of the Healthy Schools Group for three years and enjoy being a part of such a happy, successful and go-ahead school

SHANE RAE - COMMUNITY

I first moved to the area in 2000.  I was appointed as a community governor for Brize Norton Primary while holding the position of Chairman of the Brize Norton Parish Council.  I have enjoyed the experience greatly and have just started my 9th year as a school governor (2010).  I am delighted to be involved with such a vibrant and outstanding school. It has been wonderful to play even a small part in the school's very impressive results.  This success has been achieved not only by the inspirational staff but also from our fantastic network of support from the greater school community.  This community has made it very clear that they care greatly about the school and every one of its pupils.

I have been a full time teacher myself for many years, mainly in the primary sector where I taught Key Stage 2 children.  Currently I am a Senior Publisher in Primary Education.  I live in Brize Norton with my wife Alex and our children, the eldest of which is now a pupil at the school.

REV JAMES MADDERN - COMMUNITY

CHRISTINE NAUS - PARENT

I joined as a parent governor in 2008. My interest in the school is my 7 year old daughter.
Before becoming a school governor I was a child minder and before that I was Chairperson of  Brize Norton Pre-School. I am currently Vice-Chairperson of Brize Norton Parish Council.
I enjoy meeting people who live in  the village and hopefully helping the village stay the charming place it is to live in. I hope my work as a school governor will enable me to support an already successful school which plays  a huge part in village life.

ALEXANDRA RAE -STAFF REPRESENTATIVE

I began my teaching career at Brize Norton Primary School in 2001 – and have never looked back.  Soon after, my husband and I moved to the village and have found it to be an extremely warm and friendly community.  It is here that we have chosen to begin our family, and we now have two young children.

I have taught across the Key Stages at Brize Norton Primary School and love every minute of watching the children learn and progress throughout the school.  I have seen the school grow over the years – including the addition of 3 new classrooms, a hall and a newly refurbished playground and all-weather pitch.

I took on the role of staff governor a year ago and I am jointly responsible for overseeing the development of the creative curriculum and continuing to raise standards in core subjects.
